As of January 2017, 68 of the tallest buildings in the UK were at least 330 feet high. Of these, 55 were in London, four in Manchester, and two in Birmingham and Leeds. Each building was present in Brighton and Hove, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Swansea.

Additionally, 46 buildings under construction were at least 330 feet tall in the UK. Of these, 41 were in London, four were in Manchester, and one was in Birmingham.

The Tallest Buildings In The United Kingdom

The UK was not historically known for having an abundance of skyscrapers since most taller structures throughout the region tend to be church and cathedral spires. However, as of the mid-20th century, the country has experienced significant growth in tall office blocks and apartment buildings in most cities around the United Kingdom. 

The Shard

The Shard, also known as London Bridge Tower, was completed on July 6th, 2012. It is in Southwark, London, and is the tallest building in the UK, standing at 1,016 feet. The tower has 95 stories and 72 habitable floors. The observation deck on the 72nd floor at 802 feet was opened on February 1st, 2013.

Construction started in March 2009 and was inaugurated on July 6th, 2012. Sellar Property Group and the State of Qatar jointly own the Shard. It is the 107th tallest building in the world, the fourth tallest in Europe, and the second tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the Arqiva Emley Moor Tower.

One Canada Square

One Canada Square, commonly known as Canary Wharf, is a skyscraper in the London district of the same name. It is 770 feet above ground level and the second tallest building in Europe. It has 50 stories and is primarily used for office space, although retail units are also on the ground floor.  

Construction on One Canada Square began in 1988 and was completed in 1991, when it became the tallest building in the United Kingdom. However, it was later surpassed by The Shard once it was completed. The tower was designed by César Pelli, an Argentine American architect, and developed by Olympia & York.

Heron Tower

The Heron Tower is a commercial skyscraper situated on Bishopsgate in London. It is the third tallest tower building in UK, standing at 755 feet, including its 92-foot mast.  

Heron Tower

Construction of the tower began in 2006 and was completed in 2011. It was originally planned to be 591 feet tall. The architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox Associates designed it, and it is owned by Heron International. 

Leadenhall Building

The Leadenhall Building, also known as 122 Leadenhall Street, is located in London and is the fourth tallest building in the United Kingdom, at 737 feet. The commercial skyscraper features 48 floors and was designed by the British architectural firm Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners.  

The building’s construction was completed in June 2013, and it officially opened a year later, in July 2014. British Land and Oxford Properties developed this building. 

Arqiva tower

The Arqiva Tower, a significant landmark, reaches a height of 1,084 feet. Construction of this tower began in the 1960s, and it is situated prominently in Emley Moor, Kirklees, West Yorkshire. It holds the distinction of being the tallest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom.

Currently, the UK has 15 buildings that are taller than 500 feet, and most of them are located in London. In terms of tall buildings, London is on par with Paris. As of 2016, there were 18 skyscrapers in London that measured 492 feet tall, whereas Paris had 19 and Frankfurt had 15.
